Online advertising on upswing | CNET News.com

Online advertising on upswing | CNET News.com

"Nearly all of the marketers surveyed said they plan to cut spending in traditional channels such as print and direct mail to fund increases in online ads."

"When at-work Internet use is taken into consideration, online consumers spend more than one-third of their time online--roughly the same amount of time they spend watching TV. Yet marketers spend only 4 percent of ad budgets online versus 25 percent on TV."

Very interesting.

Playing devil's advocate here but could it be that part of the internet's success is due to the *lack* of advertising (or at least to its 'pull' nature as opposed to old media ads?).

With the danger of stating the obvious, I reckon that if advertisers merely "transplant" ads from old to new media they will fail (as they have in the past). Amazon showed that you can successfully develop exclusively online marketing features (e.g. recommendations, "my page", "wish list", targetted discounts).

So it looks as if you guys will have to work hard and earn your living in cyberspace...
